Medical Insurance FAQ (FSQ)

Frequently searched questions on medical insurance

1) “ontario medical benefits”  This could have several meanings: the benefits if sick the government of Ontario would provide; benefits available to buy individually in Ontario.

As we all know, basic medical care is provided in Ontario, leaving some people who do not have a group benefit plan at work with the dilemma of whether or not to purchase individual medical benefits.

In Ontario, there are several insurers providing these benefits including Blue Cross, Manulife, GMS, Sunlife, and others.

If drug costs are already a financial burden, please see the information on the Trillium Drug plan, if you are living in Ontario.

2) “medical benefit for low income families” This is a tough one .

If the enquiry is related to drug costs that are becoming expensive, the person should check out the Trillium Drug plan in #1 above. It is obvious that the issue is either high current costs, or desiring benefits at low cost. It could also mean there is an income issue perhaps related to disability, or inability to work as a result of a medical condition.

If this is the case, it would be wise to discuss this in Ontario with the Social Assistance office nearest you.

3)  “ontario blue cross emergency medical plan travel contract” I can only imagine why this search was made.

Here are the possibilities:

  • there is a potential claim and the travellers would like to know if they are covered
  • the shoppers for travel insurance are wise, and realize that not all travel plans pay for all conditions, and some only reimburse after the fact, whereas some pay the medical service up front.

The wrong time to find out you have set up a travel plan that does not work is after you need it. Speak to Nanette at 1.866.856.6799, ext 204 (option 1) today, before you travel, and she can ensure she matches the right plan to you.

4) “medical coverage for injury for self employed person in ontario” Does it sound like this enquiry was made “after the fact”?

This is the sad reality. We sometimes do not plan for medical tragedies. This search may have been made because the person did not have disability insurance and cannot afford even the drugs or other medical costs associated with his/her injury.

It is best to speak with qualified “insurance planners” that will set you up as a self-employed person to ensure first that your income is maintained, and then give consideration to the other aspects of medical cost or risk.

5) “trillium medical insurance”  What’s nice about this search is the searcher was aware there is a drug program sponsored by the Ontario Government called Trillium Drug. When prescription drug costs get too expensive, why not have the government help you? Your share is 4% of the family’s net income.
